Subaru Road Race Team Eager for Round 2 of GRAND-AM Series

- Drivers Feeling Confident for Race at Barber Motorsports Park -
Phoenixville, PA. – March 27, 2012 – Leveraging a two-month lull after the first event of the 2012 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series, the Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) travels to Birmingham, Al., after a productive period identifying and completing refinements on their #35 Subaru WRX STI 4-door race car in preparation for this highly-anticipated race. This weekend’s event will be run on the popular, 2.3-mile Barber Motorsports Park circuit.

Andrew Aquilante, Chester Springs, Pa., and Bret Spaude, Bushnell, Fl., will share cockpit duties in the race-prepped, 2012 Subaru WRX STI developed specifically to compete in a field of road racing cars developing over 400 horsepower.

“Superior horsepower is always advantageous,” said Joe Aquilante, principal of Phoenix Performance in Phoenixville, Pa., where the SRRT Subaru race units are prepped and maintained, “but the Subaru symmetrical all-wheel drive system in our WRX STI is a great benefit on a twisting, hilly track such as this one and negates the power of the V8-engined cars. We led laps during last year’s race at Barber [Motorsports Park], and our competitive lap times in January at the race at Daytona [International Speedway] drive our confidence.”

“On the twisting infield portions of the Daytona track,” noted driver Andrew Aquilante, “Bret and I were able to outmaneuver most of the field in our Subaru. We expect Barber to be more of the same.”

Added James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc., “We’re encouraged that the pace from our STI is both competitive and also repeatable lap after lap, and I’m looking forward to our team’s performance at Barber.”

Qualifying is Friday at 10:50am (ET). The 2 1/2-hour race takes the green flag Saturday at 5:15pm (ET). The Barber Park race will be televised by SPEED TV for broadcast on April 8th at 12:00pm (ET).

Sponsors for SRRT include: Subaru Of America, Inc., Subaru Tecnica International (STI), Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT), Hawk Brakes, Ron Davis Racing Radiators, ARP (Automotive Racing Products).

2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek® to Debut at New York International Auto Show

- New fun-to-drive, high-capability compact crossover
- 2.0-liter BOXER® engine and up to 33 miles per gallon
- Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, 8.7 inch ground clearance
- Available in Premium and Limited models
- Comprehensive infotainment technology

CHERRY HILL, N.J., March 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that it is expanding its line of award-winning crossover-type vehicles with the all-new 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek. The versatile, fun-to-drive Subaru XV Crosstrek, which arrives this fall, combines bold five-door design with an expanded-capability chassis, high fuel economy and everyday comfort. The new Subaru XV Crosstrek will debut at the 2012 New York International Auto Show.

Subaru based the new Subaru XV Crosstrek on the Impreza® platform, making significant changes to the chassis and body and configuring interior standard equipment and options specifically for this new model. All 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek models are powered by a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter BOXER engine, teamed to Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive via a five-speed manual transmission or available second-generation Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Although official the Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy figures are not yet available, Subaru projects the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek to be the most fuel-efficient all-wheel drive crossover on the market. Manufacturer-estimated fuel economy figures are 25 mpg city / 33 mpg highway / 28 mpg combined. The 15.9-gallon fuel tank in the Subaru XV Crosstrek is 1.4 gallons greater than that in the Impreza models.

Built for Rugged Action or Everyday Driving

Compared to the Subaru Impreza five-door model it is based on, the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek incorporates numerous body and chassis enhancements for its expanded-capability mission. Black side- and wheel-arch cladding, rocker spoiler and roof rails provide a rugged contrast to the body color. The higher ride height, roof spoiler and unique-design 17-inch wheels bolster the Subaru XV Crosstrek model’s go-anywhere stance and attitude. Front and rear bumpers and the front grille are unique to the Subaru XV Crosstrek, and dark-tint privacy glass is standard.

The rugged styling is backed up by function, as the four-wheel independent suspension features a raised configuration in the Subaru XV Crosstrek. The new crossover model’s 8.7 inches of ground clearance is higher than for most other crossovers and even some dedicated SUVs. The Subaru XV Crosstrek uses standard 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/55 R17 all-season tires to provide all-weather traction and performance. The four-wheel disc brake system in the Subaru XV Crosstrek features larger front rotors than on the Impreza 2.5i models.

The standard five-speed manual transmission includes the Subaru Incline Start Assist feature, which will briefly hold the vehicle while the driver coordinates brake and clutch to pull away from a stop on a hill. Available for the Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium models and standard on the Limited trim line; the Subaru Lineartronic CVT provides infinite variability between the highest and lowest available ratios with no discernable steps or shifts. The CVT continuously and smoothly adapts to performance demand, helping to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range. A six-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters allows the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios. With either transmission choice, a standard ECO gauge helps the driver to operate the vehicle as economically as possible.

Subaru Safety

For safety, the Subaru Ring-Shaped Frame Reinforcement body structure has been proven in more than a decade of use. Inside, the Subaru XV Crosstrek fills out its safety roster with a driver’s knee airbag and standard front side pelvis/torso airbags and side curtain airbags that offer front and rear outboard seat coverage. The passenger-seat front airbag features a shell-type design with a center groove, thus exposing the passenger to less impact force upon deployment.

Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) combines stability and traction control functions. Traction control works to augment the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive functionality. The 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) integrates Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Brake Assist safety system. A new Brake Override system ensures that the engine power will be cut when both the brake and accelerator are pressed simultaneously.

Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

Subaru offers two different Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive systems in the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek models. With the five-speed manual transmission, the AWD system uses a viscous-coupling locking center differential to distribute power 50/50 front to rear. Slippage at either set of wheels will send more power to the opposite set.

Models equipped with the Lineartronic CVT feature the Active Torque Split version of Symmetrical AWD. An electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch actively manages power distribution based on acceleration, deceleration, and available traction. The Active Torque Split system automatically transfers more power (up to 100 percent) to the wheels with the best grip should slippage occur.

Roomy, Versatile Interior

A 103.7-inch wheelbase yields impressive interior roominess in the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek. Rear seat legroom in the Subaru XV Crosstrek of 35.4 inches is close to that of some midsize cars. Large door pockets can hold plastic drink bottles and large maps. Numerous compartments located in and around the center console hold all manner of today’s personal items, such as phones, USB drives and MP3 players.

With the standard 60/40 split rear seatbacks folded, this versatile five-door crossover provides a completely flat load floor with up to approximately 52.4 cubic feet of carrying space. The cargo area is outfitted as standard with a cover that can be pulled into place or removed, a removable waterproof tray, tie-down hooks, and grocery bag hooks. Subaru dealers will offer a number of accessories for the standard roof rails for carrying items like bicycles and kayaks.

Two Trim Lines

Subaru will offer the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek in Premium and Limited models, the latter adding additional luxury amenities and infotainment technology. Among the standard features in the Premium are a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth® control switches; power windows, door locks and side mirrors; multi-function display with fuel economy information; security system with engine immobilizer; outside temperature gauge, and carpeted floormats. The standard audio system in the Premium model features Bluetooth® hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS), iPod® control capability, USB port, 3.5mm aux. input jack and six speakers.

In addition to making the Lineartronic CVT standard, the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited adds leather-trimmed upholstery, steering wheel and shift handle; automatic climate control system; auto on/off headlights, and a rear seat armrest with dual cupholders. A standard display-type audio system in the Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited incorporates a rear-vision camera and also features a 4.3-inch display screen and standard HD Radio™.

Standard on the Limited and available for the Premium, the All-Weather Package gives the Subaru XV Crosstrek heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. Both the Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium and Limited offer a power moonroof and a navigation system as standalone options. The navigation system uses a 6.1-inch touch screen LCD display and integrates a rear-vision camera, voice control, iTunes® tagging, SMS text messaging capability, XM Satellite Radio® and XM NavTraffic® (both XM services require subscriptions). Updated map data can be downloaded to a personal computer and then transferred into the system via secure digital (SD) card.

Subaru FHI Started Production of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86

- Line-off ceremony took place at the Subaru Main Plant in Japan -

TOKYO, March 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, announced that it held a line-off ceremony at Subaru’s Gunma Main Plant (Ota-city, Gunma Prefecture, Japan) with Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) President Akio Toyoda and honored guests in attendance, in commemoration of the production start of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86.

FHI and TMC first agreed on business collaboration in Oct. 2005. After the companies expanded their cooperative ties with new agreements related to development and production in April 2008, they then began four years of development. The completion of this joint-development product also marks a great achievement of the alliance between FHI and TMC.

At the ceremony, TMC President Akio Toyoda said, “I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the ceaseless efforts of all FHI people and staff who were involved in the development, production and preparations for both models. The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 would not have been successfully developed without collaboration between FHI and TMC. We started the alliance for mutual growth in 2005 and now I’m delighted to see that our alliance surely bore fruit.”

FHI President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, after extending his gratitude to all participants at the ceremony, said, “The car symbolizes our corporate strategy in two significant aspects: good progress of our alliances; and advancement of our ‘select and focus’ approach. The start of production today made a huge step for us, but it is not our goal. By constantly refining both models, TMC and FHI hope to nourish each model to be loved by customers all over the world for a long time to come.”

Subaru Gunma Main Plant, where minicars were previously manufactured, was recently renewed for the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 production. FHI plans to produce the Impreza at the same plant by March 2013.

FHI offers “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” to its customers through the Subaru brand statement “Confidence in Motion” and its consistent approach to “Engineering Excellence”.

Following very positive reviews, the highly anticipated BRZ goes on sale in the United States, spring 2012.

Subaru Debuts New EyeSight™ System

CHERRY HILL, N.J., March 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Subaru of America, Inc. has announced the debut of its EyeSight™ driver assistance system. The suite of safety and driver assist technologies will debut at the New York International Auto Show on 2013 Legacy and Outback models. EyeSight will subsequently appear on other products in the Subaru line-up. EyeSight integrates adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and vehicle lane departure warning. The new technology, which can also detect obstacles in front of a parked car and limit potential damage in an impact, will become available later this year.

Combining safety and convenience features, the Subaru EyeSight system will be one of the most affordable of such technologies available in the United States market. EyeSight uses two charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras developed by Subaru. EyeSight is mounted inside the car on the upper edge of the windshield, thus reducing the potential for damage that could occur in bumper-mounted systems, such as radar. The EyeSight system processes stereo images to identify the vehicles traveling in front, as well as obstacles, traffic lanes and other items. The video information is relayed to the EyeSight computer, which is also networked with the car’s braking system and electronic throttle control. Below speeds of approximately 19mph, EyeSight is capable of detecting pedestrians in the vehicle’s path and can activate in order to mitigate or even avoid the collision. Under certain circumstances, Eyesight is able to bring the car to a complete stop, thus avoiding a collision.

Pre-Collision Braking Control and Collision Mitigation

At relative speeds under approximately 19 mph, EyeSight’s Pre-Collision Braking System can detect obstacles in the car’s path and, if the driver has not applied the brakes in time, the system can do so to slow the vehicle or bring it to a full stop to help avoid the potential collision. Pre-Collision Braking is always on in the background to act like a second set of eyes for the driver. It can also be turned off temporarily for off-road or rough road travel.

At relative speeds above approximately 19 mph, EyeSight can apply the brakes when an object is detected, and will attempt to brake if the driver takes no evasive action, or does not brake appropriately. In this way it will mitigate potential damage from a collision. The system, which can recognize programmed objects such as vehicles, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians, can help mitigate collision damage.

Lane Departure and Sway Warning

By monitoring traffic lane markers and lines, the Subaru EyeSight system can detect if the car begins to wander outside the intended lane without a turn signal being used, or if the car begins to sway within the travel lane. Using the turn signal cancels the warning.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Intended for freeway use, Eyesight’s Adaptive Cruise Control system can maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, braking and/or accelerating the car as needed to maintain the driver-selected target speed and traveling distance. Adaptive Cruise Control is operational from 1-87 mph and can fully brake the vehicle to a stop if the system “locks on” to a vehicle ahead.

As an added convenience, Adaptive Cruise Control assists the driver in heavy “stop and go” freeway traffic by maintaining distance from the vehicle ahead. This feature can help reduce driver fatigue, which can therefore help keep the driver alert.

Additional EyeSight Benefits

In heavy traffic conditions, EyeSight will also alert the driver when the vehicle ahead has moved if he or she doesn’t react within several seconds. The technology can also help reduce collision damages by cutting the throttle when it senses an obstacle in front, but the accelerator pedal continues to be pushed. The system is also effective when a driver shifts into ‘Drive’ inadvertently instead of ‘Reverse’ when backing out of a parking space. The stereo camera design of EyeSight provides a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems.

Cautions

EyeSight is not designed as a substitute for due care and attention to the road. The system may not react in every situation. There are certain operational limitations, such as when weather conditions obscure the view of the cameras. Finally, even with the advanced technology used, a driver with good vision and who is paying attention will always be the best safety system.
