Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that it will debut the re-styled 2013 Subaru Legacy at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The 2013 Legacy is powered by either a 3.6-liter H6 or a new, more efficient 2.5-liter four-cylinder powertrain and debuts revised styling as well as the new EyeSight driver-assist system. Chassis enhancements improve both ride quality and agility in the 2013 Legacy, which also offers new amenities and audio capabilities.

The 2013 Subaru Legacy features a new, sportier front styling with new headlights, grille and front bumper. The changes will further enhance the appeal of the Subaru Legacy, which has sold in record numbers since its 2010 redesign. With standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the 2013 Subaru Legacy remains the most fuel-efficient midsize all-wheel drive sedan in America. At the same time, the Legacy rewards drivers with engaging performance and a high level of driving comfort and offers outstanding safety performance. For added safety, the 2013 Legacy adds a new Brake Override system.

Up to 32 MPG

The 2013 Legacy 2.5i models debut a new double-overhead-cam (DOHC) FB series 2.5-liter BOXER engine for increased performance and fuel efficiency. The new engine produces 173 horsepower and 174 lb.-ft. of torque, compared to 170 hp and 170 lb.-ft. from the previous 2.5-liter SOHC engine. More significant is that the new engine produces greater low-end torque across a broad speed range, making the 2013 Legacy 2.5i models more responsive in everyday driving.

The 2013 Legacy 2.5i offers a choice between a standard six-speed manual transmission and the second-generation Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission); the latter is standard on the 2.5i Premium and Limited. The second-generation Lineartronic® CVT offers more responsive and quieter operation compared to the transmission it replaces. Models with the CVT also feature a six-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters, which allow the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios.

The 2013 Legacy 3.6R continues with a 256-horsepower 3.6-liter six-cylinder BOXER engine and five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. A downshift “blipping” feature adds a sporty feel when using the Legacy 3.6R steering wheel paddle shifters.

Although official EPA fuel economy figures are not yet available, Subaru projects that the 2013 Legacy 2.5i with the Lineartronic CVT will achieve 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway/27 mpg combined, compared to 23/31/26 for the 2012 model. That makes the 2013 Legacy 2.5i competitive with many midsize sedans that come only with front-wheel drive.

New EyeSight Driver-Assist System

The 2013 Legacy (and Outback®) models debut Subaru’s new EyeSight driver-assist system, which integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. Projected to be one of the most affordable such technologies available in the U.S. market, EyeSight uses a stereo camera design developed by Subaru to provide a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems.

Retuned Suspension Enhances Agility and Ride Quality

Numerous enhancements to the body structure, suspension, and steering give the Legacy a smoother and quieter ride for 2013, while also delivering improved handling agility. Body roll has been reduced by up to 40 percent.

Increased Interior Comfort and Convenience

New seat fabric enhances comfort in the 2013 Legacy, while dark, glossy wood grain trim provides a luxurious appearance on Limited models. Limited trim level models for 2013 feature a new rear-seat A/C outlet. A new electro-luminescent instrument cluster in the Limited models integrates a 3.5-inch color screen for the multi-information display, which also shows EyeSight functions when the car is so equipped. With the Keyless Access & Start system, the driver can unlock the car by touching the door handle while carrying the remote control in a pocket or purse. (The trunk also has an unlock touch sensor.)

Three Trim Levels

The 2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i is available in three trim levels – base, Premium, and Limited. The Legacy 3.6R is available in base and Limited. Standard features in the Legacy 2.5i include steering wheel cruise control and audio switches; a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, electronic parking brake with Hill Holder System and an automatic headlight function. The standard audio system in the 2.5i model is upgraded for 2013 to now include Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability and audio streaming, iPod® control capability, and a USB charging port. The system continues with an AM/FM stereo, single disc CD player, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS), 3.5mm aux. input jack, and four speakers.

Legacy Premium models add the Lineartronic CVT plus additional amenities, including a 10-way power driver’s seat, a pair of dash-mounted tweeters, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, body-colored side mirrors, 17-in. alloy wheels (all 3.6R trim lines have 17-in. alloy wheels as standard), and other amenities.

The Limited models feature perforated leather upholstery, the All-Weather Package that includes heated front seats and mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer (package optional for Premium), dual zone automatic climate control, a four-way power front passenger seat, the display-type harman/kardon premium audio package (optional for Premium) with a 4.3-in. color display, 440-watt amplifier, nine harman/kardon premium speakers, and standard XM Satellite Radio® service (four-month free trial subscription included), and, new for 2013, a rear A/C duct, and electro-luminescent gauges. The Limited models also exclusively offer an available voice-activated GPS navigation system with a rear vision camera, and XM NavTraffic® (four-month free trial subscription included), among other features. A power moonroof is available for the Premium and Limited models.

Subaru produces a full line of all-wheel drive sedans, crossovers, and SUVs, and for 2013 has also introduced the rear-wheel drive BRZ sports car to its portfolio.

The Legacy 2.5GT model is discontinued for 2013.

The Olympus Rally runs along the beautiful shorelines of Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula. David Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew rocketed into the lead in their #75 WRX STI after impressively winning four of the first six stages. Meanwhile teammate Dave Mirra and Marshall Clarke in the #40 WRX STI kept on-pace, holding fast to a fourth-place position throughout the first day.

Sadly, a fatal accident occurred late on day one of the rally involving privateer competitor Matthew Marker of Elk Rapids, MI. Marker’s Co-driver Christopher Gordon of Brooklyn Park, MN, was not seriously injured. Due to the accident, Rally America officials halted the the Olympus Rally at the conclusion of stage six and subsequently cancelled the second day of the National portion of the event. The final results of the rally were consequently based on the leader board after stage six giving Higgins and Mirra 1st and 4th place finish positions, respectively.

31-year-old driver Matthew Marker was in his fifth year of participating in the Rally America National Championship and was a popular driver among his peers. Marker was known to have ambitions of improving his Championship standings and taking part in building the sport’s popularity. 

“As much as those of us directly involved in motorsport recognize the inherent dangers, that knowledge still serves little to lessen the loss of a fellow competitor and rally community member,” said James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc. “Matthew was a rally enthusiast and exciting driver within the sport and highly thought of among his peers. His passing is tragic, and our thoughts go out to his friends and family members during this very difficult time.”

Subaru Rally Team USA is scheduled to compete next at the Oregon Trail Rally on May 13-15, 2011.

Tinkering in his shed over the past five years, he has turned out contraptions which have featured on television.

His Brough Xtreme Vehicles have attracted worldwide interest, but he says the next challenge will be getting them to market.

Built from second-hand Subaru parts and constructed around a hand-crafted chassis, Mr Brough says the vehicles, Subzilla and the Super Quad (an ATV made from Subaru parts), don’t fall into the “normal” categories for roadworthiness.

He has just had his Subzilla, which featured on Top Gear Australia and the Discovery Channel, signed off for use in motorsport, but he says that to date, the most money he has made out of the vehicles has been from selling pictures of them.

“People see them and they call up wanting to buy them, but then I tell them the price and they are a bit surprised.”

The vehicles sell for about $US80,000 each. Mr Brough says they contain $US40,000 to $US50,000 worth of parts and materials.

“Then I have to take into account the hours that I spend building them and my overheads,” he says.

Helping to fund his Xtreme Vehicles, Mr Brough has started a hedge-cutting business, with a twist.

His business, Ace Hedge Cutting, uses a digger which has been modified in his shed with cutting blades which can fit into tough spaces.

“I was watching this couple in Whatawhata one day trying to cut a hedge that was in a really awkward position, I thought, ‘I can come up with something to fix that’.”

The self-taught engineer says he likes thinking outside the square.

“People think I’m a bit of a Burt Munro. I just love getting out in my shed. It’s more than a hobby, it’s a compulsion.”

He says he is in the process of developing a mulching head and a chainsaw head for his digger, to increase the types of cutting jobs he can do with it.

“It seems to be going pretty well so far. Maybe it will give me a bit of money to take the other projects further, too.”

Five Steps to a “Greener” Car

It doesn’t matter if the car you’re driving is new or old, big or small. There are preventive maintenance steps every vehicle owner can take to make sure their car is as “green” or environmentally friendly as possible, according to the Car Care Council.

By following five simple preventive maintenance steps, you can help protect the environment by improving gas mileage, which in turn saves money at the pump.

 

Keep your car properly tuned for optimum performance. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and fuel economy and produces the lowest level of emissions. A 21st Century tune-up can improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve gas mileage by as much as 40 percent.
Regularly check and replace dirty air filters. An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a “rich” mixture – too much gas being burned for the amount of air – that wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent, saving about 15 cents a gallon.
Have spark plugs checked and replaced if necessary. A vehicle can have four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as three million times every 1,000 miles. This results in a lot of heat, electrical, and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug also causes misfiring, which wastes fuel.
Maintain the cooling system. A cooling system thermostat that causes the engine to run too cold will lower the fuel efficiency of a car by as much as one or two mpg. There also are improved radiator caps on the market today that allow the cooling system to operate at a higher temperature before boiling over, increasing the system’s efficiency and reducing emissions.
Maintain and repair your car as outlined in the council’s Car Care Guide. The guide helps drivers understand their car, the care it needs, and when it needs it and why. Single copies of the free guide may be ordered on the Car Care Council Web site, www.carcare.org.

In addition to proper vehicle maintenance, vehicles can be more fuel-efficient if tires are properly inflated and if drivers observe the speed limit, avoid aggressive driving and excessive idling, and adhere to an errand list to eliminate extra trips to the store for forgotten items.
