Subaru of America One of First Companies in New Jersey to Install Rain Gardens to Help Improve River Water Quality

Rain Gardens Will Reduce Runoff into Streams and Rivers –

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Oct. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — As the growing importance of storm water management is underscored by recent flooding throughout the northeast United States, Subaru of America announces the installation of two rain gardens, the first of which will be installed on October 13 at the company’s headquarters in Cherry Hill, and the second one later this fall at the company’s Pennsauken, NJ office. These two rain gardens will help reduce runoff, including nutrients and pollutants, into surrounding rivers and streams, such as the Cooper River that runs along the edge of the Subaru headquarters grounds. Subaru worked in partnership with the Camden County Soil Conservation District and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Rutgers University to install the rain gardens.

Rain gardens are shallow depressions in lawns and fields that collect rainwater, which then percolates down through layers of rock, gravel or other drainage. The gardens are landscaped with native plants, which beautifies the area and helps minimize maintenance. While rain gardens are becoming more common in new construction, the Subaru rain gardens are some of the first in New Jersey to be retrofitted to corporate grounds.

“Subaru is pleased to be among the first companies in New Jersey to retrofit a rain garden – or two – at our corporate buildings,” notes Tom Doll, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America, Inc. “The rain gardens will certainly benefit the streams and rivers around those buildings, but just as importantly, they’ll help educate our employees, our corporate neighbors, and the public about the importance of storm water management.”

“Retrofitting a corporate landscape to include a rain garden is an effective way to help improve water quality,” notes Craig McGee, project director, Camden County Soil Conservation District.  ”The rain garden will allow rain water to soak into the ground instead of runoff to the streams and rivers, and at the same time provide a valuable landscape enhancement. The best part is Subaru employees and customers will learn how easy it is to install a rain garden at their home and do their part to help protect our water resources.”

“Rain gardens are an effective way to reduce routine maintenance costs while protecting the environment and improving water quality,” adds Jeremiah Bergstrom, Senior Project Manager, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Rutgers University. “Working with corporate partners such as Subaru of America is a great way to demonstrate how rain gardens can be effective for businesses, communities and even homeowners.”

5th Rally America title in past six years for Subaru Rally Team USA

Subaru Driver David Higgins Wins 2011 Rally America National Championship

-5th Rally America title in past six years for Subaru Rally Team USA-

CHERRY HILL, N.J., July 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins has won the 2011 Rally America National Championship with a 2nd Overall finish at the season finale, the New England Forest Rally, this past weekend.  In a hotly contested season Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew piloted their BFGoodrich Tires-shod 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car to three victories and two 2nd Overall finishes in the six-event Rally America National Championship.  The 2011 driver’s title is the third for Higgins in the USA having won the SCCA ProRally Championship in 2002 and 2003.  Higgins also won the British Rally Championship in 2004.

“It’s amazing and hasn’t really sunk in yet,” explained Higgins at the podium celebration. “The level of competition was really fierce all year, and it was a big challenge for me to come back to the USA after seven years away and adjust to new events, a co-driver I had never worked with before as well as new car.  But everything meshed really well and our Subaru STI was a joy to drive fast.  Driving for Subaru is every rally driver’s dream as the brand is so famous for rallying, so this is something really special for me.”

”Both David and Craig have done a stellar job the entire season extracting the utmost performance from their STI, supported by the solid car preparation by our team,” noted James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc.  “With the championship comprised of only six rounds against defending titleholders Antoine [L’Estage] and Nathalie [Richard] with their experience on those events makes SRT USA’s successful effort in regaining the championship that much more special. The effort of our team members and supporting sponsors has been exceptional, and the superlative performance of our STI was properly showcased.”

Higgins joined Subaru Rally Team USA at the start of the 2011 season, replacing longtime Subaru team driver Travis Pastrana who had earned the Rally America National Championship from 2006 through 2009. A season-long rivalry quickly ensued between Higgins and Canadian rally ace Antoine L’Estage, the defending Rally America Champion and Canadian Rally Champion.  Higgins and L’Estage were at each other’s heels at every rally with the rivalry coming to a dramatic head last month at the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally where Higgins came from behind late in the event to beat L’Estage by a mere 1.3 seconds.

The victory last month in Pennsylvania earned Higgins enough of a points lead over L’Estage that Higgins only needed to finish fourth or better at the New England Forest Rally this weekend to secure the driver’s title.  A tactical fight ensued in New England with Higgins maintaining a 2nd overall position behind L’Estage while driving just fast enough to keep the chasing pack comfortably behind him.

In addition to three event victories and the driver’s title in the Rally America series, Higgins recently won the re-born Mt. Washington ‘Climb to the Clouds’ Hillclimb.  He smashed the course record by over 30 seconds, driving the same Subaru STI he utilized in the Rally America Championship.  Higgins has little time to celebrate, earlier this month he was invited to compete at ESPN Summer X Games 17 in Los Angeles. He will compete in both the Rally Car Racing and RallyCross competitions taking place on July 30th and 31st respectively.

Subaru WRX STI Sets New Record Lap at the Isle of Man TT Circuit

- Driver Mark Higgins sets all-time fastest production car lap of 115.356 MPH on historic Mountain Course

DOUGLAS, Isle of Man, June 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Subaru driver Mark Higgins set an all-time fastest lap of averaging 115.356 MPH today on the iconic Isle of Man TT Mountain Course driving a US specification 2011 Subaru WRX STI. The previous record of 100 MPH stood for 21 years. The lap took 19 minutes 37 seconds and the WRX STI hit speeds in excess of 162 MPH.

“This was the most thrilling and frightening thing I have ever done,” said Higgins, a Manx native. “It has been my dream to drive this course since I was a little boy and I am just elated that we were able to hit the speeds we did. The Subaru was just rock solid through the mountain section and took an amazing amount of punishment on the course.”

On his first practice run of the demanding TT circuit, Higgins averaged 113 MPH on the 37-mile course. “It was difficult because we really had no idea what speeds we would be able to do on the course as we were unable to run a full lap at speed,” Higgins said. “Today we were unsure if we would be able to run because of the weather. There was hail on part of the course this morning, and heavy rain, but we were able to get a run off and it was a great lap.”

The WRX STI was a production US spec car running a standard 305 HP turbocharged boxer engine. Some safety modifications were made. The Subaru was equipped with a Lifeline fire suppression system, Hockley Motorsports roll cage, motordrive competition seats, Mintex brake pads (but stock calipers and rotors), and an open exhaust to warn spectators of the on-coming car. The speed limiter was turned off to allow a higher maximum speed; springs and dampers were changed to accommodate the numerous high-speed jumps on the circuit, sending the WRX STI almost four feet off the ground. The car ran on street legal Pirelli P Zero Trofeo tires.

“We could not be more pleased with the result of this week’s drive,” said Dominick Infante, National Manager, Product Communications, Subaru of America, Inc. “The WRX STI performed incredibly well at near flat out speeds and Mark drove impeccably. His save at Bray Hill at 150 MPH was some of the best driving any of us have ever seen.”  Footage of the incredible save can be viewed here.

Subaru is the official car partner of the Isle of Man TT Races.

The free apps allow consumers to explore the 2011 Subaru Outback, Forester and WRX/STI on the iPad interface, with 360-degree views, videos and interactive demonstrations.

In the second quarter of fiscal year 2011, Apple sold 4.69 million iPads.  In addition, 41 percent of U.S. adults noted shopping as a reason for interest in purchasing the iPad.(i) With consumers primed to shop on their iPads, Subaru’s new apps enhance the auto research experience by offering trim simulators along with engineering and Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive feature demonstrations.

Subaru Named as Official Car of the Isle of Man TT Races

Subaru Impreza WRX STI to run timed closed course demonstration lap

–Previous lap record set in 1990

CHERRY HILL, N.J., June 3, 2011– Subaru of America Inc. announced a multi-year sponsorship agreement of the Isle of Man TT Races and will run a U.S. specification Subaru WRX STI on several timed laps of the famous TT motorcycle course. The previous timed lap for a car was run 21 years ago by legendary motorsport racer Tony Pond who completed the course at an average speed of over 100 mph (160 km/h).

(Photo:  http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110603/PH13763 )

The course is the perfect test for the Symmetrical AWD confidence and control of the turbocharged, 305-horsepower Subaru WRX STI. Known primarily as a motorcycle circuit, the iconic Mountain Course is known to be one of the harshest tests of man and machine. For more than 100 years, the Isle of Man has been home to the TT Races and is notable not only for its 37 3/4 mile length, but also for the average speed of the motorcycle racers who compete through the island’s narrow roads and small towns at speeds averaging over 130 mph.

Rally driver Mark Higgins will drive a standard Subaru WRX STI on the closed course run of the Snaefell Mountain Course. Manx born and raised, the former British Rally Champion and World Rally stage winner has dreamed of driving the course for years. As part of the Subaru TT Challenge, Higgins will look to set the fastest time for a 4-cylinder production engine vehicle. A timed lap of the closed course was last run in 1990.

“I’m really excited at the opportunity,” said Higgins. “I know it will be hard work, but it’s a great challenge and I’m really looking forward to it.”

As a former test driver for Subaru, he has a long association with the factory. Mark Higgins’ brother David currently drives for the Subaru Rally Team USA.

For the timed lap, Higgins will drive a US-spec Subaru WRX STI with minor safety modifications. The WRX STI will feature a roll cage, race seats and harnesses, uprated brake pads and will run Pirelli racing tires. A louder exhaust has also been specified to alert fans to the on-coming car.
